“We did it because it is the right thing to do.”

By Vanessa Paeschke, Distribution Center volunteer

“My son Eric and I have volunteered together regularly at the Food Pantry on Saturdays and during the summer for the past four years.  We didn’t do it because of any obligations to fill – instead we did it because it is the right thing to do – to help our community neighbors through rough times.

I know the friends he has made – both with clients (one even tutored him in German!) and the food pantry staff and volunteers (one even invited Eric to come down to his campus lab to see what he was working on) - and the many experiences we both have shared will not be forgotten as he moves away to attend college.

Working together regularly on Saturdays guaranteed interactions between us and I will miss that when he leaves.  It’s not easy to get a teenage boy to talk to his mom!

This truly was one of the most rewarding experiences that both of us have had.”

Thank you, Vanessa and Eric, for your commitment to making this community a better place.  Good luck, Eric, as you bring these experiences with you on your next life adventure!
